Economic View Client June 4 (Yan Shuxin) Recently, the First International Mountain Tourism Day and Mountain Tourism International Forum (Nepal) has been successfully held in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.

During the forum, Mr. Frangialli, the Honorary Secretary-General of World Tourism Organization, told the reporter of  Economic View Client, that China’s mountain tourism has great potential for development and has been welcomed by many domestic tourists. With the further improvement of development mode and supporting facilities, more international tourists will be attracted in the future.

On May 29th, the International Mountain Tourism Day and Mountain Tourism International Forum (Nepal) was held in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.

Mountain areas are not only important tourism resources, but also ecological resources for human physical and mental health. Mountain tourism attracts more and more tourists because it is in line with people’s desire to return to nature and pursue health and happiness. Data shows that mountain tourism has accounted for 20% of the total global tourism, showing an increasing trend year by year.

“After coastal tourism, urban tourism and business tourism, mountain tourism is also becoming an important part of the world tourism market, but also strong and growing. The establishment of International Mountain Tourism Day is to let more people know about mountain tourism and pay attention to the development of mountain tourism,” Mr. Frangialli said.

He pointed out that most of the world’s mature mountain tourism destinations are based on snow and ice, and traditional resorts such as Banff, Chamonix and Zermatt also rely largely on such resources.

For example, on August 8, 1786, Jacques Barmat climbed to the summit of Mont-Blanc, the highest peak in Europe. Nowadays, nearly 20,000 climbers repeat Barmat’s behavior every year. The road to the summit becomes a crowded highway, and the same the same thing happened to Mount Everest in Nepal.

It is known that March-May is the spring mountaineering season of Mount Everest. During this period, the climate of Mount Everest is warm, the vision of that is clear, the possibility of snow/rain is relatively less, so many mountaineering enthusiasts will choose this time to try to conquer the world’s highest peak. According to the Guardian, due to the sunny weather and the surge of climbers, there have been many “traffic jams” on Mount Everest recently, and many climbers have to queue for hours in the “dead zone” above the altitude of 8000 meters.

Mr. Frangialli told the reporter of Economic View Client that, at present, winter sports such as mountain cross-country and skiing have become a huge modern industry, especially in Western Europe and North America. However, the skiing industry is relatively fragile. It is not only affected by changes in consumption patterns, but also by global warming. “As a basic resource of winter tourism, ice and snow are becoming increasingly scarce.”

However, China’s mountain tourism does not take this approach. “Most of the mountains in China have very different natural conditions from the Alps and Rocky Mountains,” Mr. Frangialli said.

Economic View Client understands that, based on the natural characteristics and conditions of China’s mountain areas, there are three main development modes of domestic mountain tourism, namely, the development mode based on ecological tourism, forest vacation and sports exploration. Among them, eco-tourism is still the basic demand of mountain tourism in China.

Mr. Frangialli pointed out that China’s mountain tourism market has a promising future. On the one hand, China has abundant mountain tourism resources; on the other hand, there is still much room for development of domestic mountain tourism.

It is understood that China is a mountainous country, the mountain, hilly and plateau areas of that accounting for 69% of the country’s total land area, and its mountain landscape is rich and diverse. “However, up to now, China’s mountain areas are still ignored by tourists, especially international tourists.” Mr. Frangialli pointed out that in recent years, a large number of international tourists are pouring into China, but their scopes of tours are still concentrated in cities and cultural attractions, ignoring Mountain Scenic areas, “only a few tourists come for eco-tourism.”

Mr. Frangialli mentioned that if China’s tourism industry would like to attract more international tourists, it needs to provide more diversified tourism products and destinations, including rural tourism and mountain tourism.

“There is still potential for further development of mountain tourism in China. At present, China’s mountain tourism has been welcomed by many domestic tourists. With the further improvement of the development model, supporting facilities and other aspects, as well as the necessary adjustments to the needs of international tourists, China’s mountain tourism will bring more and more tourists from all over the world the new tourism experience,” Mr. Frangialli said.
