Outside-The-Box Awareness Campaign Promotes Cybersecurity Reaching Internet User’s Homes

New York, New York – October 17, 2019 – Held every October, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) is a collaborative effort between government and industry to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and to ensure internet users have the resources they need to be safer online. This year’s message – Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT. – will focus on key areas including citizen privacy, consumer devices, and ecommerce security.

“As we approach the 16th annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we remind connected technology users that safeguarding the internet is a responsibility we all share,” said Kelvin Coleman, NCSA’s executive director. As cyberattacks are becoming more common, NCSAM is a great opportunity for businesses to enhance their commitment to cybersecurity with their employees and customers. CISA Director Christopher Krebbs, said, “Every one of us has a seemingly ever-expanding digital footprint – across a range of devices and accounts, at home, at work, or at school and locking down that footprint is a never-ending job.” He added that their goal is to “raise our collective security to the next level” by focusing on a handful of simple steps everyone can take and use.

NCSA together with key partners and the Cybersecurity Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)  ̶  which co-leads the campaign  ̶  will distribute materials and engage on social media with the goal to drive behavior change with consumers, businesses and the general workforce on cybersecurity best practices.

Webroot, a leading provider of Internet security software for the consumer, launched this week a creative and unconventional outside-the-box awareness campaign to educate the population by reaching their homes with cybersecurity messages placed on pizza boxes and door hangers. To create the campaign, Webroot partnered with the NYC based startup Adzze who executed the placement of the advertising message at several pizza venues in Chicago as well as the placement of door hangers at several households. “Lock out Cybercrime.” It features the outline of door hangers that prompt the audience to scan a bar code and take a cybersecurity survey.

According to Webroot research, cyber threats are on the rise. Using the Phileas® spyware research system, Webroot has discovered nearly 6.5 million websites harbor spyware; a 183 percent increase since January of this year. By using the right technology and key security practices, consumers and businesses can not only protect their computers, identities and information from cyber criminals, but also play a proactive role in helping protect the nation’s critical infrastructure from man–made threats.
