First Impressions Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Shares Insight on When a Child Should First See a Pediatric Dentist
A lot of young parents are not aware that their child’s first dental appointment with a pediatric dentist should occur by their first birthday. First Impressions Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics along with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) all recommend early pediatric dental care and should be no later than baby’s first birthday.

Appleton, Wisconsin – Many young parents know when their child should see a pediatrician for well-child checks, immunizations, etc. But many are not aware that their child’s first dental appointment with a pediatric dentist should occur by their first birthday.

In fact, First Impressions Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics along with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) all recommend early pediatric dental care and should be no later than baby’s first birthday.

This first visit is full of valuable information about the proper way to clean infant teeth, feeding habits, and pacifier use. The conversation between dentist and parent/caregiver sets toddlers up for greater success when it comes to their dental health and healthy habits as they grow. Establishing healthy habits early is integral to preventing decay and maintaining oral health.

The first appointment also includes an exam. (Thereafter, exams are typically needed yearly until the child reaches age three). The early visit with exam, combined with good dental habits and dietary practices, can slow or even reverse the dental decay process in children.

In fact, a 2014 study reported by Pediatric Dentistry confirms that children who visit a dentist by age one have 3.5 fewer cavities!

Having your child see a pediatric dentist – a dentist specially trained to work with children – can be especially helpful when trying to establish these lifelong healthy dental habits, easier done when the child feels comfortable and empowered in their dental home.

“Everything we’ve done is very purposeful: for children to have a positive dental experience,” says Dr. Thomas Turner, pediatric dentist and managing partner at First Impressions. “Our entire office is designed for children’s comfort and confidence, including brightly colored walls, child-sized furniture, a slide in the waiting area, and TVs and iPads.

“We want children to know that this office is just for them,” continues Dr. Maggie Chicka, pediatric dentist and partner with First Impressions.

Yet surroundings are not the only difference between a pediatric dentist and general dentist. Perhaps most importantly, pediatric dentists receive between two to three years of additional training above and beyond dental school. This training and education focuses on the growth and development (physically and emotionally) of children. Many parents have provided positive reviews and validated their positive experiences with their First Impressions’ pediatric dentist in Appleton, WI on their Facebook page.

“Children are not simply little adults,” says Dr. Ned Markey, pediatric dentist and partner with First Impressions.

When their surroundings are this comfortable and their pediatric dentist is an expert, in-tune with them, children truly want to come to the dentist.
