Dr. Michael Omidi, the founder of No More Poverty non-profit organization, has partnered with Actions of Hope directed by Yolanda Abaca to plan a mission to San Miguel, Bulacan, Philippines. The mission will focus on treating patients with head and neck cancers, breast cancers, thyroid tumors, congenital disorders such as cleft lip and palates, burns and pediatric hand deformities. The trips had been funded by Dr. Julian Omidi and Cindy Omidi. The mission will consist of two surgeons, Dr. Michael Omidi, lead surgeon, Dr. Lee Augeneral surgeon, 3 local general surgeons assisting in follow-up care and 8 ancillary staff members, nurses, surgical technicians, translators, and social workers.

In previous missions, the surgeries were performed in the district hospital and University Hospital in San Miguel, Philippines. 40 major procedures were performed in patients with breast cancers, thyroid cancers, cleft lips and palates over the span of 3 weeks. Many patients suffering from life-threatening conditions in the remote areas in the Philippines do not have the resources to travel to the closest major city for treatment. The district hospitals which are more accessible do not have the resources to treat the patients.

The longest procedure was a multi-loculated tumor in a 20-year-old male that had been suffering from a mass approximately the size of a basketball that had been growing since the age of 12. Dr. Omidi performed the removal in a two-stage operation, the first consisting of 16 hours and the second 7 hours to safely remove the entangled tumor from sensitive structures in the neck. The operation was a success with all of the tumor removed safely without any complications. The patient has been tumor free for over 5 years now.

Dr. Omidi states, “We try our best to perform as many surgeries as possible with the limited resources since the patients may not survive without treatment until the next mission. In every mission, we always wished we had just one more day to treat those in need.”
