A Beacon of Hope in Troubled Chester, PA

June 07 02:57 2019

Chester, PA, has a battered reputation. Once a thriving manufacturing hub, the city is now better known for poverty and violent crime, with Chester placing second on NeighborhoodScout.com’s ‘Murder Capitals of the US’ list in 2019.

However, there are also positive forces at work in Chester. This month, the local Asbury African Methodist Episcopalian Church is celebrating 173 years in the community with a public re-commitment to being there for those in need, beginning with a cross-lighting ceremony and revival service on Friday, June 27th and ending with a service calling for a ‘Greater Asbury’ on Sunday, June 30th.

“We live in a time where many are hurting, hopeless, and burdened by their needs. Specifically, in our Chester area, there is killing and violence daily and not enough support for those in poverty or disenfranchised,” says Evangelist. Taikeya Johnson, a spokesperson for the Church. “We believe that God has a plan for each and everyone’s life. We want the world to know that we love our family, friends, and community and intend to be a help and friend like Jesus.”

The Church’s Four Day Kickoff will also include a Victory Gospel Explosion on Friday June 28th  featuring Nick Reynolds and The Family Affair, MDM Praise Dance, Spoken Word by Donyae Lynelle, Chozen of Asbury, and more, and a Community Day on Saturday June 29th with activities, dance, music, empowerment speakers, and free food for the whole family.

“It has been 20 years since we lit the cross at the top of our building, and now we will be lighting it once more to let the community know that we intend to be a beacon of light in our community, sharing the love of Christ and help,” says Evangelist. Taikeya Johnson. “All the events that make up our Kickoff are free and open to anyone who wants to attend – it’s time to bring some good news and positive changes to Chester.”
