Every summer, Green, Loggerhead, and Hawksbill turtles make the treacherous journey to the shore along the beaches of the Riviera Maya and Cozumel to lay their eggs. Using the earth’s magnetic field, these turtles are able to return to the exact place where they were born to lay their eggs. Female sea turtles then lay up to 200 eggs at once and bury them in the sand near the shoreline to protect their future offspring from predators. Around 6 weeks later, the eggs hatch and the newborn turtles make their first small steps towards the ocean.
