HOW THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY OF ELK GROVE UNIFIED IMPACTS PARENTS AND STUDENTS

June 03 13:50 2019

The Virtual Academy of Elk Grove Unified strives to celebrate every child’s uniqueness by providing an individualized learning experience. The learning option of the Virtual Academy offers a different learning experience that can positively impact a child’s ability to thrive academically by reducing stress and anxiety or even by providing the type of learning space that child needs to thrive.

Kelly White is a mother who enrolled her son in the academy when he started kindergarten. She says, “I wish I could better express my love and appreciation for the Virtual Academy and the teachers there.  As you know, Logan started kindergarten there in its inaugural year. Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances, he had to transition to a brick and mortar environment in the fourth grade. I can’t begin to tell you how detrimental that was to his academics. He went from a Gold Honor Roll student to almost failing by the time he was in sixth grade. We were fortunately able to enroll him in the Virtual Academy again for seventh and eighth grades, and it has been better for him, but he still has some adjusting to do. However, I know that had he remained in the brick and mortar environment, he would have given up on himself long ago. The Virtual Academy offers our family the flexibility and learning environment Logan needs to comprehend lessons, move at his own pace, and succeed! Thank you for everything you, Jenny, and Ceonita have done.  Logan and I appreciate you”.

Another parent, Cari, writes, “My son is 9 years old and in the fourth grade.  He has always been in a public brick and mortar school, but has NEVER enjoyed school.  Each new year would bring about new challenges and he was so stressed and anxious about school, that the thought of it was starting to cause physical issues. We decided to try EGVA [Virtual Academy] at the beginning of his 4th grade year, 2018-2019 school year. HE LOVES EGVA [Virtual Academy]!! Mrs. Williams is his teacher, and she is very understanding to his needs and tries very hard to keep his workload “stress free” for him. She understands his struggles and only tries to make things easier, instead of adding more to it. He talks about school now, in a positive way, instead of upset and negative. His grades have improved, because he is truly able to work at his own pace.

As a parent I was terrified of homeschooling, because I did not want the responsibility of the curriculum. EGVA [Virtual Academy] has been wonderful for me as well. Mrs. Williams is here to help, with anything and everything that we need. She sets his lessons, which takes that pressure off of me, grades his work and keeps tabs on both of us to ensure we do not get behind. Overall, this has been a wonderful change for us. I asked my son, “do you want to go back to brick and mortar school next year?”, he said “are you crazy!!!” I take that as a no!

Thank you EGVA [Virtual Academy] and Mrs. Williams!”.

We love to hear how the academy has helped your child’s learning and development, and it’s why we do what we do.
