Lewis and Van Vleet Signs Joins New Jimmy Mak’s Project
PDX Structural Engineers Assist in the Rebirth of Iconic Jazz club

Portland, OR – Lewis & Van Vleet, the structural engineer powerhouse out of Portland Oregon, have signed on to assist in the reopening of the historic Jimmy Mak’s iconic Jazz club. The new location of Jimmy Mak’s will be on the corner of NW 12th Ave and Hoyt St. in the iconic Pearl District.

Jimmy Mak’s was originally opened in 1996 by Jimmy Makarounis, aka Jimmy Mak, his wife, and his parents. The original building that housed the famous jazz club was sold for development in early 2016. Although Makarounis had plans to reopen the club elsewhere, he had been battling Larynx cancer for four years at the time of the buildings sale and was unable to find other avenues to keep the business open while he stepped away to focus on his health. Jimmy Mak’s final show was on December 31, 2016, and Makarounis passed away just days later.

In 2019 it was announced that the iconic jazz club would be returning to the Pearl District at a new location. Just a few years after the original location closed, a group of investors is working on reopening the club that once housed some of Portland Oregon’s most prominent jazz musicians. The new location on NW 12th Ave. and Hoyt St. was once the home of the Oba Restaurant. Lewis and Van Vleet are proud and excited to be a part of the development team bringing this PDX classic back to life. Lewis & Van Vleet managing partner, Scott DeBo said, “We are excited to be a part of this project. Jimmy was a personal friend and a wonderful person. He was known and loved by everyone in downtown Portland. His club was such a central part of Portland’s nightlife and music scene. I can’t think of a better way to honor him than to re-create his vision and to keep bringing great acts to Portland in a hip new venue. Hats off to all of the people working to make this a reality. The finished product is going to be fantastic!”

The new Jimmy Mak’s club will be considerably larger than the last allowing for more space to host more guests and performers. Other improvements include two full bars, a large full-service kitchen, and updated acoustics along with an all-new sound system. The new building will have some civil and structural renovations along with a new paint job, and signage reminiscent of the original club. Lewis and Van Vleet are teaming up with multiple other consulting firms based out of PDX. Other partners including longtime Jimmy Mak’s operations director, Lisa Boyle.
