“Charming China” events during 72nd Cannes Film Festival close

The “Charming China” events of 72nd Cannes Film Festival were successfully concluded on May 16 local time at Cannes, a beautiful town in southern France. During the two-day events, guests and people from film and television industry around the world were attracted to various kinds of activities to feel the uniqueness of “Charming China” during the festival.
 
The “Charming China” events held during 72nd Cannes Film Festival is jointly guided by Cannes Film Market, Film France, CNC (Centre National de la Cinématographie), hosted by Xinhuanet and China Film Foundation, and sponsered by Huayi Brothers Co., Ltd. and Wu Tianming Film Fund for Young Talents, including a series of events such as “The Young Filmmakers Development Programme”, “Overseas Promotion of Chinese Film Industry”, “Promotion of the Most Beautiful Shooting Location in China” and “Chinese VR Films Immersive Interactive Experience Exhibition”.

The promotion and award ceremony of “The Young Filmmakers Development Programme” were held on May 15. The programme, as one of the highlights of “Charming China” events, was divided into two competition units: “Short Film Works” and “Film Scripts”. Since its startup, more than 800 pieces of works have been collected, including feature films, action films, documentaries and etc. Eventually, 32 works stood out. Among them, Inheritor, narrating the heritage of traditional Chinese operas, won the Best Award for Short Films by Young Filmmakers; and the screenwriter Lin Weiran of the feature film Great Ideal People has won the Best Award for Young Screenwriters. The round table forum on “Gathering and Promoting Growth of Young Filmmakers” was also held on the same day. Filmmakers from China and France exchanged their ideas, educational experience and the general situation of young filmmakers in both countries.

On May 16 (local time), an event was held at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival to recommend China’s most beautiful shooting locations on the theme of “Charming China”. In the event, Huanghai Seaside National Forest Park in Dongtai, Jiangsu Province, Baili Rhododendron Nature Reserve in Bijie, Guizhou Province, Siming District of Xiamen, Fujian Province, and Li Autonomous County in Lingshui, Hainan Province were on the list. The promotional films about the scenery in these four cities were also screened repeatedly in the festival’s official projection hall.
 

Audiences all over the world experience VR films
 
It is worth mentioning that, as an essential part of “Charming China” events, the booths for “Overseas Promotion of Chinese Film Industry”, “Promotion of the Most Beautiful Shooting Location in China” and “Chinese VR Films Immersive Interactive Experience Exhibition”, jointly launched by Xinhuanet and Cannes Film Market, were displayed during the festival. The booth for “Overseas Promotion of Chinese Film Industry” was designed to unfold the vigorous development and comprehensive strength of Chinese film industry to the world. More than 20 representative Chinese film works, such as The Eight Hundred and Skyfire, were introduced on the scene.
 
As the representatives of Damei China (Chinese version of Wild China), the four places of Huanghai Seaside National Forest Park in Dongtai, Jiangsu Province, Baili Rhododendron Nature Reserve in Bijie, Guizhou Province, Siming District of Xiamen, Fujian Province, and Li Autonomous County in Lingshui, Hainan Province have their own publicity films screened repeatedly at the booth of “The Most Beautiful Shooting Location in China”, attracting many foreign filmmakers’ attention. “Chinese VR Films Immersive Interactive Experience Exhibition” showed two VR films with Chinese characteristics, namely Fly over Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival and Hui-style Architecture. By combining traditional culture and technology, the films help to deepen the understanding of overseas audience about Chinese culture, expand the appeal of Chinese traditional culture to the public and make Chinese traditional culture “move and go globe”.
