Sleep Disorders and Back Pain: Why Mattress Matters

May 23 03:06 2019

Sleep makes us feel great and is something we all enjoy – yet why are 40% of Canadians likely to suffer from sleep disorders during their lifetime?

Research published in 2011 in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry looked at the experiences of 2,000 Canadians aged 18 and over, finding that 40.2% reported at least one symptom of insomnia – including trouble falling or staying asleep, and early morning waking.

The long-term health risks of sleep disorders can be severe – the Public Health Agency of Canada reports high blood pressure, heart failure, cardiovascular disease, depression and type 2 diabetes as some of the most serious of these. In a report by CBC News, consultant and sleep expert Dr Frank Ryan called it a “sleep debt you can never fully repay”.

High Sun Mattress is a Vancouver-based company specializing in the manufacture of customized mattresses, and with more than 30 years’ experience in the field they are accustomed to providing specially designed solutions for a variety of sleep requirements.

“At High Sun Mattress we put great emphasis on regularly researching sleep standards in Canada as we firmly believe the quality of a mattress can dramatically influence how well you sleep,” said a spokesperson for the company.

“Custom sizes of mattress and the foam used within control the comfort and durability of mattresses, and we vary these according to the individual needs of customers. For example, if you have a physical condition that is causing some pain, we can advise on the best option that will provide an ergodynamic approach to your sleeping position.”

Back pain is one such condition that can be greatly exacerbated by poor quality bedding, which can negatively affect sleeping positions. Research from Statistics Canada found that back problems are among the most common chronic conditions in Canada, with four out of five adults likely to experience at least one period of back pain during their lives.

While the causes range from physical (poor posture, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity) to psychological (depression and chronic stress), recommended treatment is one or two days of bed rest to alleviate the symptoms. The Canadian Chiropractic Association reports that medical costs related to low back pain can be anything between $6-12 billion each year.

“Another area of research we closely follow is back and spinal cord care,” added the spokesperson. “Our standards of manufacturing are consistently geared towards new innovations that will solve problems causing back pain, ensuring greater comfort and a higher quality sleep experience.”

High Sun Mattress also offer to beat any other price on similar products by 5% and, with a range of product options across beds, mattresses and sofas/sofa beds, the company is focused on offering something for everyone.
