Starting April 28th and ending May 3rd, Fiesta de la Santa Cruz dates back to 1848 when Casimiro Cardenas and 21 families safely made it to Cozumel after their homes were destroyed during the Caste War. According to legend, Casimiro was able to safely make it to Cozumel by clutching a wooden cross to his chest. He vowed to honor the Holy Cross, thus starting a tradition that has lasted 171 years. To this day, direct descendants of the 21 families are still involved in planning and kicking off the festivities.
Fiesta de la Santa Cruz is the perfect slice of culture and history for visitors of Cozumel to enjoy.
