Raising Funds To Get A Place For A 67-Year-Old Grandmother

April 15 11:36 2019

For the past 9 years my mother, Savitri, has been looking for a place to call home. She’s a proud 67-year-old grandmother of four. She spent her life working hard as a housekeeper. She always worked hard to provide for her family. Unfortunately, in 2006, she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and was forced to leave her job.

After her diagnosis, she had a tough time moving around and performing simple daily tasks such as taking a shower or making something to eat. The symptoms are relentless and unforgiving; even getting in and out of a chair can trigger sharp pain.

To make matters worse, my dad, her husband of 38 years, suddenly passed away from a heart attack in 2010. My parents had immigrated to the United States 16 years earlier with the hope of providing their children (myself included) with a better life.

After my dad passed away, my mom was left with a large mortgage and minimal government assistance as her sole source of income. Unable to afford the mortgage payments, her home and constant of 12 years was foreclosed on by the bank in 2015. This left her in a precarious situation with no place to call home.

She then moved in with my brother and lived with him for 5 years. Since he traveled a lot for work, she was often left alone. Being alone and having her arthritis flare up led her to be unable to do basic tasks such as using the bathroom or making a meal.

My mom then moved in with me. Luckily, my wife is a stay-at-home mom, so she is able to care for her. They go grocery shopping together, and she takes my mom to her doctor’s appointments and makes sure she is taking her medications. This has helped my mom feel more comfortable and maintain her dignity. She also enjoys spending time with her grandchildren (my children) who help keep her spirits high given the circumstances.

Unfortunately, our home is small, and with six people living under one roof (my mom included), it gets crowded at best. The days and nights can be chaotic and loud, as is typical with younger children, this makes it hard for my mom to get rest, especially when her symptoms are severe.

Here’s what we’re looking to accomplish –

My mother needs her own place to live. We would like to build a small ADA friendly home next to our home. An ‘ADA friendly house’ is a home designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities or mobility issues.

This new home will allow her to live in peace and manage her arthritis as she ages. She will also have the help of her family living close by, just minutes away in case of an emergency. Being this close will also allow her to continue spending time with her grandchildren without having to travel and with minimal effort.

How will your contributions help?

Our family will build an ADA friendly home for her near our house which would allow for the following:

• My mom can focus on enjoying life and maintaining her dignity and independence.

• Our family will continue helping her manage her chronic arthritis and ensure that she’s taking her medication.

• She will be able to decide how to spend her time, whether it’s alone or with her family.

• We are only minutes away in case of an emergency, giving her and us peace of mind.

• She will finally be able to call a place of her own “home”.

• She won’t feel like a burden on her children.

Much, much more!

Sadly, many older men and women like my mom are left to fend for their own as they age. The costs of living are getting increasingly high, and families just can’t handle another mouth to feed.

Building my mom a house would be a dream come true for our family.

Thank You for Supporting My Mom!

Every single contribution will help take our dream and turn make it a reality. No child ever wants to see a parent without a place to live. It’s our goal to give back to our mother and provide her with a home to live in.

Naturally, building a home is incredibly expensive. In fact, the estimated cost for an ADA-friendly house will run well over $100,000 USD.

There’s no doubt, $100,000 is a massive amount. However, it’s nothing in comparison to the love and support our mother has given us over the years.

Your contributions will directly help us build an ADA-friendly house for her.

Please support my mom today – let’s give her a place to finally call “home”.

Thank you again for your generosity.
