AVID IMPLEMENTATION IN PALMDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT CREATES A CULTURE OF HIGHER-LEARNING AND COLLEGE-MINDEDNESS

Palmdale School District (PSD) is putting its students a step ahead by implementing the AVID program in every school. AVID — Advancement Via Individual Determination — is a nationwide nonprofit organization that focuses on preparing students for their future in college, careers, and life. With 6,000 schools participating in AVID nationwide, nearly two million students are positively affected by this program.

The partnership Palmdale School District has with AVID provides each school site in the district with professional development, resources, and support for educators that gives an added lasting impression on the work students are already doing. Students in AVID work with their AVID teachers and tutors to make goals for their core classes and electives to accelerate their learning. AVID provides a scaffolded approach so that students have the skills to be academically independent and organized.

Many districts partner with AVID, but Palmdale School District proudly goes beyond the norm and implements AVID at the elementary school level. By doing so, Palmdale elementary students are given a chance to develop higher-level thinking skills and academic habits at a young age that will go with them through middle school, high school, and college. The culture that AVID creates at PSD elementary campuses encourages students to think about their future plans at a young age.  In an age-appropriate way, AVID elementary students learn about organization, study skills, communication, structured note taking, and working through critical thinking questions.

AVID focuses on lending students the tools they need to find a path to college. Many of these students in the AVID Secondary program are students who will be the first in their families to attend college or are from groups often underrepresented in higher education. At PSD middle schools, students can choose to attend AVID as their elective course where they will receive academic, social, and emotional support to help them succeed in their most rigorous courses. Building on the skills they’ve learned in AVID, PSD middle school students are able to enter high school better prepared to study strategically, take notes properly, and be ready to choose classes that will assist them in college.

About Palmdale School District

Palmdale School District dates back to the late 1800s when German and Swiss families emigrated to the area and called it “Palmenthal” after mistaking the local Joshua trees in the area for palm trees. Now serving the majority of the city of Palmdale, California, the district has approximately 19,000 students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Palmdale School District’s vision is to be a district where every student leaves ready for success in high school, college, career, and the global world. The mission of PSD is to implement it’s vision with actions and services targeted to students, parents, and staff so students can live their lives to their full potential.
