For those without a strong knowledge of the sport, it may seem that one tennis court is exactly like another and all surfaces are the same. Experts however, will tell you otherwise. The condition of your tennis court and the substance that it has been constructed out of can have a significant impact on the outcome of your game and how well you play. Depending on what the courts are made out of and the quality of materials used, ball speed and bounce height can be dramatically affected. Certain surfaces contribute to faster play while others can slow play speed down.

Another factor that can affect your tennis game is the condition of the court. Cracked or uneven surfaces can cause tripping hazards or can change the angle of the ball when it bounces. Some surfaces are highly affected by harsh weather, such as cold and snow, and if not properly maintained can be a hindrance to your game.

Crowall Surface Contractors Ltd. are experts in the field of tennis court construction and have been in the industry since 1977. Their service area spans all of Ontario and they know a thing or two about what is required to play a good game of tennis.

“Most people think that the key to winning their next tennis match is working on perfecting their backhand,” says a spokesperson from Crowall, “We believe, however, that one of the most important aspects of a good tennis game is proper court construction. By playing on a clear and level surface, made of the right materials, you will be able to see such an improvement in how well you play. Many people don’t realize that using improper materials or falling behind in maintenance will not only affect the look of your court, but will also affect your skills.”

Tennis court surfaces

There are many different types of court surfaces that can be used when constructing or resurfacing your tennis court. Each has their own benefits and can provide a different feel when playing your next match. Some of the most popular types of surfacing materials are:

  • Clay Surfaces – This options is made from either clay or brick and provides a smooth surface that can absorb impact and is easier on joints when playing. It can be installed over top of an existing court and is the option that requires the least amount of future maintenance.
  • Artificial Turf – Artificial surfaces give the look and feel of real grass without the requirement of maintenance and upkeep. These surfaces are softer than most and therefore can help prevent injuries to players.
  • Soft Asphalt – This tennis court surface is made of multiple layers of stone with an asphalt top that is easy on the joints of players and allow them to slide when going after the ball. It is very low maintenance and is the preferred method to be used when repairing existing courts.
