Melasma, a form of hyperpigmentation, affects upwards of 70% of pregnant women and around 10% of men. Because of the widespread nature of the condition, Canada MedLaser has concentrated its efforts on creating effective Microdermabrasion treatment that also has the ability to aid in laser skin tightening for overall improved skin. What is Melasma?

Sometimes referred to as the “mask of pregnancy,” Melasma most commonly appears in women who are pregnant due to its link with hormones. Increased hormones can also increase pigmentation especially in the face which creates the “mask” quality of the condition.

Melasma, unlike other pigmentation concerns, is unique in that it creates a symmetrical pattern. This can mean an even, single patch on the forehead, nose or chin, identical patches on each cheek or even in all these areas at once. It can occur on the arms and neck as well, but the face is most common.

Is Melasma Dangerous?

Melasma is a benign and common condition. It is not contagious, nor will it spread to other parts of the body. However, an uneven skin tone can give a person an older appearance and aesthetic that can be desirable to correct.

Will Melasma Go Away on Its Own?

Because Melasma tends to increase or appear with pregnancy hormones, the condition can improve after pregnancy. However, this is not always the case and many sufferers will not see a natural reduction in its appearance until they are much older. While it is not a painful or serious condition, it is common and necessary to obtain treatments to restore one’s appearance.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work for Melasma?

Microdermabrasion from Canada MedLaser uses the finest crystal particles to create a gentle yet abrasive spray for the face. This abrasive quality strips away the top most layers of skin to reveal healthier, smoother flesh underneath while also reducing the discoloration caused by Melasma.

Canada MedLaser also offers laser treatments for Melasma and skin tightening. Laser treatment can sometimes be more effective depending on how deep the pigmentation goes and how large of an area it covers. Laser treatment can also be used for other skin pigmentation imperfections such as acne scarring. Its ability to tighten skin and improve general facial skin quality make it an effective option for many clients.
