Arizona Society of Human Resource Management launches AZ HR Games – a Collegiate eSports Competition

March 14 18:15 2019

Phoenix, AZ – Arizona Society of Human Resource Management (AZSHRM) has announced that it is leading the charge in bringing the thrill of eSports to the HR industry, right here in Arizona. AZSHRM has partnered with EDGE Challenges to develop AZ HR Games. This competition is HR driven, but uses real-time strategy computer games. The platform allows participants to quickly see and feel the impact of their leadership skills and competencies on the mission and their team. Since AZSHRM is a trusted leader in providing HR expertise to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage and help companies ‘win’ at business, this seemed to be a natural fit.

Through the two-day competition, teams of college students will compete against each other, where each side must work to have better teamwork and chemistry within the confines of the game in order to win. Much like business, players fill different roles and positions, and then these students will need to figure that out on-the-fly in order to take their team to victory. In addition to the gaming component, students will also have a case study that they’ll work through and present to a panel of prestigious community business and human resource leaders. The winning team and most valuable player will receive scholarship prizes.

“eSports is exceptionally popular, having hundreds of millions of fans each year. AZSHRM wants to leverage that power and be the first to bring that level of excitement and fun to our very own HR games”, says Matt Wilson, President of AZSHRM. AZSHRM and EDGE Challenges collaborated to bring AZ HR Games to life. “EDGE Challenges hosts a series of leadership simulations for executives, so designing a program to showcase the strength and leadership skills of future human resource professionals was a perfect next step in our organization’s evolution,” says Kevin Black, Principle and Founder of EDGE Challenges, Phoenix, AZ.

The competitions are modelled off the NFL Combine, where NFL team scouts watch and identify the best players during practice seasons. The AZ HR Games allows local recruiting companies, HR consulting firms and employers the opportunity to gain an inside look at the best and brightest HR talent from our local colleges and cheer on the best team. “Creating the environment where college students can apply their extensive education to real-world human resources situations, where everything isn’t so cut and dry, will be exciting to watch. How they choose to handle each situation will demonstrate their leadership skills as well as their ability to collaborate effectively,” says Laurie Brednich, CEO of HR Company Store who has been recently appointed as the new Director of College Relations for AZSHRM.

AZ HR Games takes place at Galvanize on October 24 and 25, and tickets go on sale April 1 and can be purchased directly through www.azhrgames.com.
