Hazel Goes Cook Elementary in Chula Vista Proudly Named International Baccalaureate School

March 13 19:10 2019

Hazel Goes Cook Elementary has been named an official International Baccalaureate (IB) school, the only elementary school in the South County to offer an IB program. Earning this designation is no small feat, as IB schools must go through a number of requirements as part of a rigorous process that can take about five years.

Cook Elementary Principal Gabriela Llamas said the school  wanted to offer its students an education focused on instilling skills for success in today’s global economy. “At the same time,” Llamas said, “we wanted give our teachers the opportunity to be a part of an international network of experts leading the field in education. We are excited about becoming an IB School. With the Primary Years Program, we can develop a foundation for students as they progress to middle and high school International Baccalaureate programs if they so choose.”

International Baccalaureate programs have gained a reputation for their rigor and high academic standards in preparing students for life in a globalized 21st century for the last 50 years. The Primary Years Program is for students ages 3-12. The IB curriculum challenges students to deepen their conceptual understanding and knowledge across multiple subject areas with global significance.

With the IB program in place, students at Cook Elementary are taught the WHY of education and their curiosities guide the direction of instruction. This type of teaching lends itself to high quality instruction and learning where students guide themselves to be internationally minded. To learn more about the IB program, visit www.ibo.org.
