Dehesa School is located in the rural hills of East County San Diego, in close proximity to the Sycuan Reservation. The Sycuan Band are a part of the Kumeyaay Tribe which have a long and rich history in San Diego County and surrounding areas. Dehesa School has many connections to the Kumeyaay and to the Sycuan Reservation and offers its students many ways to connect to San Diego history through these peoples.
Students at Dehesa School, which consist of EAK to 8th grade, visit the Sycuan Cultural Center three times per year for enriching lessons on Kumeyaay history and culture. During these visits, the students are also able to collaborate in activities and lessons with Sycuan tribal and community members. The tribal members are able to teach the students are their celebrations and traditions and introduce them to traditional crafts. Based on these learnings, students are led by Sycuan Cultural Center staff and community volunteers in art projects to remind them of their visit.
Among the cultural lessons, students at Dehesa School can also participate in weekly Kumeyaay language classes. These classes are led by volunteers from the Sycuan Cultural Center. Golf Lessons are also offered to students at the Sycuan Reservation Golf Course, where Sycuan professionals teach students the ins and outs of the sport. All of these activities are an amazing way that Dehesa students are able to connect to a new culture, creating unity and understanding in the community, and learn about an important piece of the American history puzzle.
