LYNWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STARTS DUAL IMMERSION PROGRAM TO PROMOTE CULTURAL AWARENESS AND BILINGUALISM

February 27 20:46 2019

Lynwood Elementary School in the Novato Unified School District (NUSD)  launched the Dual Immersion English/Spanish Language Program this year beginning with Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and 1st grade. In the 2019-20 school year, 2nd grade will be added as the 1st graders advance, then 3rd grade in 2020-21, etc. until 2022-23 when the entire school is a full dual immersion school.

Curriculum instruction for all subjects will be taught in Spanish 90% of the time and English 10% of the time for TK, Kindergarten, and 1st grade. The Spanish/English balance will shift 10% each year until the balance becomes 50/50 in 5th grade. The Dual Immersion Program at Lynwood will enable students to become culturally aware and competent individuals who are bilingual and bi-literate. These skills will carry students into their futures and allow them to be productive and engaged in the diverse global community.

The benefits of dual immersion programs are numerous, including greater cognitive ability, improved achievement for English Language Learners, student achievement that meets or exceeds performance in traditional programs, better employment options, and a love for new cultures! Staff, students, and families at Lynwood Elementary School are excited to come together as a community to support each other in the development of this amazing program.
