Taking a Correct PD Measurement of the Eyes

February 15 00:51 2019

Whenever you are buying new eyeglasses, whether it be for style or reading, getting the proper measurements of the lenses is imperative to how well you will see out of them. The optician you visit will use a device that will correctly measure the distance between your pupils so that the lens will fit perfectly in the center of them in each eye. However, today, many people are purchasing their frames and lenses from online stores and getting the right lens fit can be difficult. There are ways that you can do this at home in order to get the right fit.

Buying Eyeglasses Online

When you visit the website of any online eyeglass store, such as Felix Gray, you will find that they will need to know your exact prescription and a pupillary distance measurement. In order for you to get the correct measurement, many of these stores will include some type of ruler that measures in millimeters for you to use. You can take the measurement by placing one end of the ruler against your forehead with the end in the center of your left pupil. While looking in a mirror, you can then read the distance from that pupil to the center of the pupil in your right eye. This is your pupillary distance. In his explanation, the company owner states that while you can measure the distance itself, it is better to have it professionally done by an optician. You can also ask a friend to measure the distance for you. After placing your online order, you may have to wait several weeks to receive your new eyeglasses. However, prices for online eyeglasses can be much lower than purchasing them in a traditional eyeglass store.

Why Is Pupillary Distance So Important

All lenses are manufactured with a curve and the center of the curve must be placed directly at the center of your pupils. This gives you the correct vision in your eyeglasses. Since there can be a variation and extrema of human interpupillary distance from one person to the next, getting this measurement precise is important. The average distance for most people can be 63 millimeters but this number will vary greatly. Using the correct distance measurement, you can then enter your prescription online and place your eyeglass order. The online companies cannot fill your prescription without knowing what this distance is. Most eye doctors will be able to take this measurement for you and you should ask for it when you get your exam. It would be wise for you to take the measurement several times before entering it into your order.

No matter where you purchase your eyeglasses, when you receive them, you should always test them out. You need to be able to read signs from a distance and close up. This is especially important for people who wear bifocal lenses. Since the upper part of these lenses will be for seeing at a distance, the lower part is used for reading. A good pupillary distance measurement is mandatory for these lenses.
