Recently, Ye Kaizhi, president of Academy of Anhui Painting and Calligraphy (located in Wuhu, Anhui Province) and member of World’s Painting and Calligraphy Association, was interviewed by hundreds of overseas and domestic media, which broadcast the interviews in their art programs. Introduction to the art of Ye Kaizhi
Ye Kaizhi, born in 1941, graduated in Xiamen University, Advanced Calligraphy training class of Academy of Arts in Renmin University of China and correspondence class in Anhui Normal University. He takes great interest in poetry and Chinese couplet, especially skilled in acrostic poetry, palindrome poems and famous calligraphy works recorded in ancient tablets. His works perform with dense official script of Han Dynasty, sharpness in tablet of Wei Dynasty, and the beauty of official script of Tang Dynasty. He also intensiveky studies the elegant style of two-brushstroke running script, integrates his own poetry with calligraphy, which excel in both poetry and calligraphy.He is skilled in all scripts, so he can combine all their merits and create excellent and outstanding works.

As president of Academy of Anhui Painting and Calligraphy,member of World’s Painting and Calligraphy Association，member of Council of China Painting And Calligraphy Association,Chinese Poetry Asscoiation, Chinese Calligrapher’s Association，Anhui Calligrapher’s Association, World’s Chinese Poetry Association，Mao Zedong’s Poetry Association ，Calligrapher Association of central state organ and member of work council of New literature and art community of Chinese calligrapher and painter sodality, honorary academician and visiting professor of British Royal College of Art, he was also conferred honorary doctorate by Sweden Royal College of Art. He was issued a certificate by national famous calligrapher and painter accreditation committee and obtained golden margined certificate of national first-class calligrapher in February 2nd, 2007. He received professional title certificate of national famous calligrapher issued by IS09000A Painting and Calligraphy Artist Qualification Certification Centre and China famous calligrapher and painter association. Approved by people’s government of Yejiang Region of Wuhu City and China Art Society, he obtained certificate of intangible cultural heritage inheritor of acrostic poetry, palindrome poems and running script. His artistically unique works gradually become popular in art working investment and collection market, which is of high artistic value and investment value. Ye has been studying ancient tablet works and is as skilled as famous calligraphers.He was taught and trained by famous calligraphers such as Hu Kangmei, Wang Yong, Shi Kai and Zen Xiang. Through their instructions and his practising wisdom, his ardent love in calligraphy, and his willpower, he has been practising calligraphy for long, and studying ancient tablet. Knowledgeable of many things, he likes reading books to cultivate his works. In the improvement-keeping calligraphy workshop,he makes the running script refined and elegant, adding recognizable style features into his works. Kang Youwei, great master of stele study, interpreted the fantasy of calligraphy with profoundness of stele study. He thought the beauty of calligraphy is on the writing brush, also on the ”stele”. Ye’s works, firm and tenacious, sharp in the stroke, strength like carving, is much experienced ub the stele study, so his works are similar to the skill Kang came up with, though not contemporary. With the help of culture of stele study, he has innovated in his calligraphy, abandoned the bad traditional habits in calligraphy. He is very swift on his hand when writing. In the whole process, we can see his strength and elegance in stroke.He combines hardness and softness in his pratical works. In running script, his stroke is very flexible and swift, and the change of lines is enriched, and the work turns vivid and lively, which makes Ye a special creator of technique of the brush!
Except for his amazing skill in the brush, he is also skilled in the continuity of strokes. He is never casual at the stroke. Before the stroke, he is good at thinking of the continuity. His predetermination is thinking of the structure before the stroke. He has a well-thought-out plan, and he is knowledgeable of the classical. He likes the flexible style of Zhang Xu and Huai Su, continual in big font, freeness in small font. Up and down, contrast and reflection, this is the essence of running script. Qigong once said: Continuity is like house building, without deflection. Ye believes in Qigong (a calligraphy master), traces back the traditional calligraphy, repeatedly study the great works of ancient calligraphers like “Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu, Cai Xiang, Huai Su, and Zhang Xu, and comprehends the essence, so he can create elegant works. It’s difficult to understand the beauty after many strokes, but we can realize his work by only one continuity, one character.
