SoCal Racers Against Drugs Teach Flying Hills Elementary School Kids to Reach for Their Dreams During Red Ribbon Week

December 22 02:26 2018

This year, students at Flying Hills Elementary School of Cajon Valley Union School District received an extra special visit for Red Ribbon Week. The SoCal Racers Against Drugs (RAD) came to Flying Hills to support the mission of Red Ribbon Week and give students there a fascinating look at race cars. The excitement felt by students on the blacktop as they looked at the exterior, engines, and unique interiors of the race cars was evident on the day of the RAD visit and gave students a positive feeling as they heard the message of the week.

Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign honored by thousands of schools across the nation to raise awareness and pledge to fight against drugs and the violence and destruction they cause. The campaign was created in response to the 1985 murder of  Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique Camarena, whose death triggered support nationwide for the DEA’s cause: to fight against illegal drug use. The first Red Ribbon Campaign was celebrated in 1988 and has affected students and families every year since.

Like the Red Ribbon Week campaign, RAD is a non-profit organization that provides information and support to students fighting against drugs. RAD believes that children can be whatever they strive to be as long as they reach for their dreams, and not drugs. Made up of race car drivers, crews, and racing enthusiasts, RAD uses racing as a way to reach and connect to kids. The RAD presentations get kids up close to real race car drivers and their vehicles, which opens the door to talking about driving safety, drugs and how to say no, what to do if a friend is on drugs, making good choices and believing in yourself. All of the members of RAD are volunteers and love helping youth across San Diego say no to drugs.
