Hand-crafted wines made with sustainable practices to provide distinct flavors

Buellton, CA – Santa Barbara County offers a unique setting for wineries. The region is open to the sea and experiences more hostile grape growing weather than other popular wine making hotspots. Despite the often times difficult weather, Santa Barbara County wineries thrive and there are over 150 local tasting rooms attracting locals and outside travelers alike.

One local Santa Barbara winery, Martellotto, can trace its history over 6,500 miles away. It was in Puglia, Italy that the Martellotto story began. There, owner Greg Martellotto’s grandfather was born and raised. However, at the end of World War I, with Italy in financial trouble, Nanno Martellotto moved to the United States and decades later, Greg began making wine in the Santa Barbara region. Whether it was pre-destined that he would go into the winemaking industry or not, the younger Martellotto followed in his grandfather’s footsteps.

Although winemaking wasn’t Greg’s first career choice, he set out to become a doctor, he settled into the creative world of making fine reds and whites. In many ways, Martellotto’s work isn’t too far off of being a doctor. Rather than taking care of patients and nursing them to health, Martellotto develops distinct, bold tastes in his laboratory. Both careers take patience, precision, and painstaking time to get things right.

It is the combination of Martellotto’s family history and the region that give the winery its amazing vintages. The Santa Barbara winery uses sustainably grown grapes to give each bottle a taste that is lacking from mass-produced wines. Martellotto wines, unlike mass-produced bottles, are experiences and bottles that provide character with each sip. The grapes that produce Martellotto wines come from the Santa Barbara County area giving wine drinkers a real taste of the region.

The Santa Ynez Valley’s Happy Canyon, with its distinct landscape and soil, is the key area in which Martellotto sources its wine grapes. The growing epicenter is renowned for the grapes its yield. Since 2014, Martellotto has turned its focus to producing Bordeaux varietals from Happy Canyon. While certain areas of Santa Barbara wine country experience cool, inhospitable weather, Martellotto selects grapes from the hottest part of the Santa Ynez Valley. The hot weather gives the grapes more flavor to produce dynamic red wines. Martellotto believes there is a big future for Bordeaux wines and hopes to share them with customers all over the world.
