How Does Laser Acne Scar Treatment Work?

Laser treatment for acne scarring works by either striping away top layers of the scar to reduce its severity and thickness, or by promoting new skin growth to cover the damaged area. The laser can also be used to resurface the scar tissue. Redness in a scar can be addressed with laser treatment by pinpointing blood vessels and shrinking them. By reducing the size of blood vessels, redness is also reduced.

Results will vary from patient to patient and can take several sessions – typically 3 to 5 with 6 weeks in between each. Overall, laser treatment will not completely remove an acne scar, but it can dramatically improve the appearance making the condition easier to manage and camouflage.

Risk and Aftercare for Laser Acne Treatment

Minimal risk and side effects are associated with laser acne scar removal. A topical anaesthetic is applied to the area to be treated and the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Redness, mild pain, swelling, and tenderness are the most common side effects. Typically, these effects will last a few days or less and complete healing will take as little as three days.

Who is a Good Candidate for Laser Acne Scar Removal?

Laser acne scar removal is safe and effective for many people, however, there are exceptions and considerations. Those who have open sores or active acne outbreaks should not get laser treatment until these issues are resolved. Additionally, those with certain medical conditions, smokers and those who take some medications may also have other risks.
