KAYAK TO KLEMTU // TRICOAST ENTERTAINMENT
The last 20 years has boomed with films containing environmentalism themes.

Los Angeles, CA – December 17, 2018 – Give back this holiday season with family-friendly films that send a powerful message about nature, ecology and environmental protection.

“For those environmentalists who get behind the camera, however, the silver screen becomes an avenue to engage audiences in the issues, threats, and hopeful developments shaping their children’s future. In spite of the rapidly changing and increasingly fragmented media landscape, cinema remains a powerful tool for swiftly transforming lay viewers into impassioned advocates and activists,” observed Sierra, reporting on Wild & Scenic Film Festival. The festival’s launched comes from volunteers laboring to protect the Sierra Nevada’s Yuba watershed in 2003.

From climate change to preserving cultures and from protecting waterways to sustainability, eco-friendly films share powerful messages about preserving and protecting our planet and all the beautiful nature it offers. In a time not limited to, global warming, carbon dioxide emissions and the extinction of species overtime, the holiday season is a time to give back.

1. Hoot (2006) – Directed by Wil Shriner

Based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel “Hoot”, Hoot is about a group of children trying to save a burrowing owl habitat. Roy A. Eberhardt (Logan Lerman) moves with his family to Florida from Montana. At his new school, Roy is bullied but soon meets Beatrice “The Bear” Leep (Brie Larson) and her stepbrother “Mullet Fingers” (Cody Linely). The three join together to protect and save the burrow owls nesting on the future pancake house lot.

2. Over the Hedge (2006) – Directed by Tim Johnson + Karey Kirkpatrick

Starring Hollywood favorites like Bruce Willis and Steve Carell, the animated film Over the Hedge follows forest animals that wake up from hibernation to find their habitat destroyed and replaced by a human neighborhood. The animals have to survive by stealing food from humans, and avoiding getting run over.

3. Kayak to Klemtu (2017) – Directed by Zoe Hopkins

Zoe Hopkins’ six-time winning family adventure, Kayak to Klemtu, explores the human themes of love, family, bravery and forgiveness as a small family sets out for a kayaking adventure of a lifetime along the shores of the Great Bear Rainforest. About more than family, ethnic loyalties, and the loss of a loved one, Kayak to Klemtu is a film deeply rooted in humanity, spotlighting the possible catastrophic effects that could occur on any part of our world’s coastlines and waterways. The inspiring film stars North Vancouver’s Ta’Kaiya Blaney, who is a real-life environmental and Indigenous rights activist, with accolades including speaking before the UN.

4. Whale Rider (2002) – Directed by Niki Caro

Oscar nominated and based on the book by Witi Ihimaera, Whale Rider is a contemporary story of love, rejection and triumph. Following a young Maori girl, she fights to fulfill a destiny her grandfather refuses to recognize.

5. Avatar (2009) – Directed by James Cameron

Avatar tells the story of a paraplegic soldier that travels to the planet of Pandora to interact with Indigenous Na’vi people and to conquer the foreign land. However, after interacting with the inhabitants, he finds himself siding with them. The three-time winning Oscar focuses on the central themes of respecting the environment and nature and shows the destructive nature of humans.
