POSCO Chooses Altibase over Oracle and Lowers Database-Related TCO by 60%

December 10 20:16 2018

Altibase is pleased to announce that POSCO, the world’s fourth largest steel maker, has installed Altibase in-memory/hybrid database. The Altibase database will allow POSCO to get real-time data from its blast furnaces while reducing the total cost of ownership by 60 percent.

Altibase has completed the installation of its in-memory/hybrid database for POSCO for its manufacturing execution system (MES). POSCO, a South Korean steel maker and a Fortune Global 500 company, chose Altibase over all other databases to upgrade its IT infrastructure for its aging blast furnaces.

POSCO needed a database to obtain, analyze and detect data related to any flaws of inner linings of blast furnaces in real time. The company conducted a series of BMTs among Oracle, Oracle TimesTen and Altibase. Oracle and Oracle TimesTen were dropped in the final runoff mainly due to cost issues. Altibase was chosen on the basis of its performance and reliability compared to Oracle and Oracle TimesTen at a fraction of their cost.

Several other factors made POSCO go ahead with Altibase:

  • Altibase offers an all-in-one hybrid technology. The data can be stored and manipulated in main memory alone, on physical disk alone or a combination of both. This further lowers its cost of ownership since POSCO does not need to purchase an in-memory and a disk-resident database separately.
  • Altibase is open source. POSCO trusts Altibase’s product reliability and rich functionality, and will benefit from lower costs associated with open source databases for its future database deployments.
  • Altibase’s built-in replication features. These offer POSCO with peace of mind and accountability in the unexpected failure of its master servers.

The migration of data was done by POSCO using Migration Center, a free utility that Altibase provides to migrate various data objects from Oracle to Altibase. It ensures 100% data integrity and consistency. Integration was accomplished with Altibase’s ODBC/JDBC drivers that allow for hassle free integration with various applications provided by other vendors. For enhanced performance of replication, Altibase provides its unique parallel receiver apply technique, which further improves replication in comparison to Oracle and Oracle TimesTen.

We are pleased to announce that POSCO has adopted Altibase. This is yet another milestone for the product, and we are excited to offer the cutting-edge features of Altibase along with a very low total cost of ownership,” said Paul Nahm, Chairman, Altibase Corp.

After 20 years as a closed source database, Altibase is now open source. Learn more about Altibase at: https://youtu.be/pooexk0glK8, and download its open source database including sharding at: http://altibase.com.
