A Workplace Is a Weekday Church, Each Working Movement Should Be like a Service to God

Competition for securing talented manpower for survival and competitiveness of companies is getting intensifying. After the Great Depression of 1929, search firms became legalized in Korea to solve unemployment problems after the IMF foreign exchange crisis in 1997. Today, more than 400 search firms are active in Korea. Due to its short history, search firms have varying degrees of competence depending on their size and recognition, their professionalism in headhunting, and expertise in their job. Jobnews Solomon Search co., Ltd. has been known as the top 3 search firm in Korea with a history of more than 20 years and 170 talent coordinators (also known as headhunters).

Dong-yeon Kim, CEO of Jobnews Solomon Search, is a veteran talent coordinator and Christian CEO with 30 years of experience in recruiting and recommending talents while also being a pastor. He holds a master’s degree in economics from Yonsei University and a Ph.D. in Christian Counseling from Christian University of Canada. He also graduated from ATA, Graduate School of Theology, Baekseok University. Since 2013, CEO Dong-yeon Kim has been serving as pastor of the company by establishing the Solomon Workers’ Church in the company. Our reporter visited the Jobnews Solomon Search office located on the first floor of the Miju Plaza in Seocho-gu, Seoul. The spacious 500m2 office was impressive at one glance. CEO Dong-yeon Kim’s unusual mission and commitment to workplace ministry was even more impressive. He added, “We will have an additional 500m2 office nearby and will invite 300 additional talent coordinators next year to grow into a total of more than 450 recruiters making us one of the largest search firms in Korea.” “We will contribute to establishing a workplace community with spirituality and professionalism by launching the ‘2060 corporation workplace church pastoral business project’ to about 250,000 corporations nationwide.” CEO Dong-yeon Kim also stated that he was planning to support a self-sustaining workplace ministry capable of generating income by educating and commissioning overseas missionaries as talent coordinators.

In the interview, he said, “There is still little awareness and education about workplace ministry in many seminaries. I don’t hesitate to point out that pastors must understand and see in perspective of their church members and also actively progress workplace worship services.” Pastor Kim said, “Likewise, professionals who are church members don’t have to become pastors in order to serve God in their entirety, but just need to change their perspectives that they are on a mission while working.”

What is the future vision for Jobnews Solomon Search and Solomon Workplace Church?

“By the first half of 2018, we invited 300 talent coordinators for the 4th Industrial Revolution, technical fusion, cultural contents, social services, and machine operation, and I am praying for this operation to become a 450-member large-scale global search firm.”

“In addition, we plan to carry out the ‘2060 corporation workplace church pastoral business project’ for the 250,000 Christian enterprises of the 585,118 corporations in Korea (Statistics Korea, December 16, 2016). The theme is’ Let’s build a workplace community with spirituality and expertise! An active Christian entails a lively workplace!’ We plan to make Solomon Worker’s Church a weekday service model to the current system where members only serve the local church on Sundays. It is my belief that the second revival of Christianity in Korea will begin from here, once a weekly chapel is achieved in 250,000 profitable Christian enterprises. Full-time pastors who have been trained by industry groups will serve as CEOs and assistant chairpersons, and will take full responsibility for the spiritual aspects of their employees. If such top management is accomplished, the best shepherd and spiritual salvation at work will become possible, and the workplace will soon become a mission field while being profitable. Above all, instead of separating from local churches, workplace churches can work in partnership with local churches. Members should serve their local churches on Sundays and become ambassadors of God in the workplace of the week, acting as light and salt.”

As a 21st Century Christian, ‘The Workplace Is The New Mission Field’ – Business is Mission (BIM)

“The workplace is a very important area for the advancement of the kingdom of God in the 21st century. We have to go to workplaces as missionaries every morning. We must proclaim the kingdom of God in a loud voice through our workplace, our products, our services, the way we deal with people, and our organizational culture. The most important thing in the 21st century is that we all recognize the workplace as a place of mission and recognize that each one receives the ability to live the life of a missionary from God. We are working to develop the ‘Public Life’ in each area of the world, ‘the perspective and thinking framework needed to integrate faith,’ the tools and resources needed to apply these two practices, and the place where we should concentrate our efforts is ‘the life of a missionary in the field of life’.

The new mission paradigm in the 21st century is Business is Mission (BIM) which are as follows:

1. Learn and apply the biblical (scripture-centered, worship-centered) management principles of life-centered business.
2. Start seminars for raising Christian enterprises (local resource exchange and local business application discovery)
3. Effective and practical education on founding businesses (local culture, law, language, coworkers)
4. Practical education based on field experiences and theories.
5. Re-education of practical business case, financial management, time management, spiritual training.
6. The number of Christian business people should increase so we can communicate the gospel around the world.
7. Politics, business, Christianity, Education, mass media, and all fields
8. After thoroughly reviewing domestic and foreign ministries (including their own talents and appropriate training after receiving appropriate training), it is possible to exert the influence of the ministry in the long run.
9. In the field of ministry, you cannot link a co-worker to cooperate with a missionary. Examples of essential requirements for missionary ministry include: *Talent (cooperative ministry co-workers) *Products (competitive local solutions and tools for evangelism, medical care, education, etc.) *Marketing (securing distribution bases, etc.) *Funds (Co-operative support, donations, creation of income through local self-sustaining business)
10. Areas of life Leaders who are influential in the workplace should change their societies as king and priest. Furthermore, it is necessary to share the vision and strategy that contribute to world mission and re-education.
11. The business that has been recognized as a tool for mission should now become a ‘mission itself’, and a new 21st century mission paradigm should be held to raise the Christian entrepreneurs in the mission field to see the fruits of mission.
12. As a small flame raises a great fire, biblical Christian businessmen are to be established as the leaders of the economic revival and spiritual revival of the land where the biblical Christian businessmen are sent as king and priest through ‘Christian foundation seminars’.
