Business Leaders Discuss Employee Empowerment for Organizations and Companies of Different Sizes

November 17 03:10 2018

St. John’s, Antigua – Dozens of representations from both the public and private sectors participated in a corporate luncheon to help them unleash employees’ potential to contribute to thier organization’s success and transform the workforce mindset with a focus on productivity.

Under the theme of Empowering Employees: How to Be an Effective and Influential Leader, the leading regional microfinance institution, Axcel Finance, led this initiative aimed to help current and future leaders within the business community develop the skills on how to become more effective in their roles.

Dedicated supervisors, managers and CEOs from different companies had a chance to listen to comprehensive presentations from leading HR experts in Antigua and Barbuda. Representing the Government, The Hon. Samantha Marshall, Minister of Social Transformation and Human Resources commended Axcel Finance for this initiative and shared some advice with the participants stating “if you are investing in your business, you must first invest in your employees.” She went further to say that “when you invest in the education and training of employees, you’re building the human resource capacity.”

Speaking about the changing dynamics in the workplace, Ms. Shirlene Nibbs, a leading HR and hospitality expert in Antigua and Barbuda, advised participants to view themselves as mentors rather bosses. Focusing on the younger employees, she said “It is important to provide the millennials with great opportunities for learning and development, and a work-life balance.” Ms. Nibbs continued to say “money isn’t everything to millennials. They value the attractiveness of the work itself as well. It’s imperative to motivate the workforce by allowing them to be a part of something important.”

Mr. Eurel Hodge, Senior Labour Relations Officer at the Antigua and Barbuda Employers’ Federation presented on the topic of empowering employees. Throughout his talk, he imparted the utmost importance of trusting employees, learning the skill to listen and ask questions, and providing frequent feedback. “Employers need to assume that issues are also caused by processes and not always the people,” he said. “The failure to check the lifeblood of the company leads to inefficient performance, low ROI, and poor profits,” he added.

The corporate business luncheon is the latest initiative by Axcel Finance which continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to the development of our communities.

Mr. Samuel Rosenberg, CEO of Axcel Finance addressed the participants and said, “Many of us struggle to identify the most effective ways to improve productivity in our businesses. As leaders, we must strive even harder to take a more comprehensive approach to our human capital to understand all aspects of the employee’s well-being, from physical health, mental health to financial health.”

The participants were extremely grateful for the opportunity to engage in well-detailed discussion with the speakers. They acquired vast, concrete and realistic knowledge for their businesses.

Mr. Jahvaun Goodwin, Operations Manager of Axcel Finance, said the company is committed to exploring more opportunities to engage in similar forums on current challenges which are impacting business leaders.
