Department of International Trade Promotion, Thailand, Promoting Advancements In Motion Pictures Industry

November 15 23:40 2018

Bangkok, Thailand – DITP (Department of International Trade Promotion) represented Thailand at the American Film Market 2018 from 31st October to 7th November. Attending were eight Thai companies, including GDH 559, Hollywood (Thailand), M-Pictures, PLH Holdings, and Sahamongkolfilm International, bringing the latest Thai feature films, Benetone Films providing production services, Kantana Sound Studio, and The Monk Studios, providing animation and VFX services.

The eight participating companies reported deals totalling $55m, an increase on last year’s results.

Since the success of ‘Bad Genius’ in China (over $45m box office) just over a year ago, Thai sales at AFM have been boosted significantly by licensing in the Chinese market.

Notable successes this year include:

GDH 559 brought their latest title ‘Homestay’ to AFM. ‘Homestay’  is currently riding high at the Thai box office, grossing over US$3m in its first week. At AFM, GDH 559 sold Japan rights to Twin Co., Ltd. and Taiwan rights to Vie Vision Pictures within the first two days of the market.

GDH 559 produces two to three high-profile films a year. At AFM they also pre-sold Taiwanese rights to ‘Friend Zone’, in production for release in 2019.

Following the successful roll-out of Thailand’s cash rebate for international productions shooting in Thailand, there has been a surge in international feature films coming to Thailand. Benetone Films, one of Thailand’s leading production services companies, has announced a number of upcoming productions. ‘Zombie Tidal Wave’ for NBC/Universal is already in pre-production in Thailand.

At AFM, Benetone Films signed deals for three productions.

Hollywood (Thailand) attracted significant interest in ‘The Lake’, Thailand’s first major monster movie, and is now in advanced stages of negotiation for international rights in a number of territories including Japan and China. In addition, they will shortly announce an output deal with an international VOD service.

The DITP will continue to support and promote the content and services of Thailand’s film and animation industry at international venues, including the Cannes Marché du Film in 2019.
